To celebrate a new design on The-Cheap.net (arriving the week after Valentine’s Day) that will now be optimized for mobile and tablet devices, we are holding another fun game for our readers. All of our games give valuable market research back to our authors!
Each week in March, we will feature a set of book covers for our readers to:
Each week we award gift cards to our readers in a similar format to how we ran Santa Sampler. We randomly draw from the readers who rated the most covers in a week and also a smaller prize from readers who completed at least 3 cover ratings. Also, we will giveaway overall gift card prizes so readers who can’t focus in one week but can rate all month long have incentive to do so.
In Santa Sampler, where our readers read and rated book samples (a promotion we will do again in the summer), our readers devoured as many as 25 books in a week. We also gave away over $2,500 in gift cards. Hands down, our readers loved that event and said over and over again they checked out books they would have never looked at before.
Now we are doing this with covers.
For $40, your book will be part of the giveaway for one week in March, but available to be rated all March long. It is a week of focused promotion, but a month of general advertising. Also, at the end of the promotion, YOU get a spreadsheet of the feedback plus any reader contact information they elect to share. For Santa Sampler, we had at least 30 readers read and rate each book. For this promotion, I expect more than 50 readers per book because there is less time a reader must give to enter the contest.
The-cheap.net, where the contest will be held, currently receives 7,000-10,000 page views per day and over 40,000 unique visitors per month. We have readers that are about evenly split between Kindle, Nook, and iPad devices, and span just about every genre, though our biggest pockets of readers enjoy mystery/thriller, YA, romance, christian, fantasy, and buy books for their kids and grand kids in the MG and Children’s genres. We will allow erotic romance in the cover contest provided the cover is non-titillating, meaning more like 50 Shades of Gray or a romance cover, NOT a graphic cover you wouldn’t want your 8 year old to see. We do reserve the right to reject any cover we deem inappropriate for our audience.
The results will remain hidden for each book, but our readers will be honest. They take the opportunity to give honest feedback very serious. Most have been ereading for over two years and own multiple devices. If you have a hand-drawn or homemade looking cover, you will definitely find out.

You will find out your book’s week assignment before March 1 when the contest begins so you can advertise your book’s page if you choose to.
WHERE DOES THAT $40 GO?
20-25% will go towards prizes. The flexibility is because promotion do best with a round number of prizes. If 10% ends up being $240, I’m going to bump that up to an even $400 etc.
10% will go towards advertising the event DURING the event.
40% pays for staff time to make the pages before the event
20% pays staff running the event
20% pays staff for closing the event and awarding prizes

To see an example of what the readers will be doing, visit the sample form! After they read and rate a cover, they will be given an option to reveal what the book is about and price or to move on to the next book. We do want to SELL books with the promotion too since we are Amazon and iBook affiliates. The cover game is a fun way to get readers to interact with your book listing and give you feedback.

Since August 2012 when we reopened The-Cheap.net, we’ve had 772,055 views (1/16/2013, Jetpack stats). Currently, the blog averages a solid 7,000 to 11,000 views DAILY. December 2012 had 245,325 views and January 2013 has 175,044 as of January 20, 2013.
So that’s it. For $15 you can have 3 Facebook Posts in one week, or for $25 you can get a blog post to go along with those Facebook posts.

**If your book is exclusive to Amazon, we only share your book in Cheap eReads once during the week you purchase.
There are no set days, as we post each book by hand and spread them out through the week based on the total ads purchased in the week. You can check for your book though in a Facebook search, by searching “supporting author [Your Name]” in Facebook’s search box.
When we price our book for FREE as authors, this is what we imagine will happen:
Readers will get my book for free, read it, love it, and tell a ton of other people so that afterwards, I will get more sales!
With Amazon’s KDP Select program, authors who can rise to a certain level on the Free Sales Charts see a nice bump in sales afterwards because the ‘Zon machine will start helping with exposure. As the book rises in ranking on popularity lists, it is seen by more readers just visiting Amazon looking for a new book to read.
Traditionally, The-Cheap.net has offered a free advertising of freebies, and we still have that option here. However, when we advertise a book for free, we are solely relying on the affiliate monies that come from that listing to pay our staff, therefore we are very selective in the books that we run based on availability. It is a slush pile, if you will.
Our newest promotion is for authors who have prepared for a successful free run:
We are dedicating the ebook giveaway spot on The-cheap.net (top right corner of the site) to promoting up to FIVE indie free ebook titles per day. That’s it. Only 5. We still promote our other freebies in the freebie column, but this is for the top spot on the blog.
After an author’s free run is over, next we promote the book with our classic, 3 Facebook posts in 1 Week promotion. This is a piece of the puzzle many authors who are trying to capitalize on a free run miss: you need to nudge along the paid sales right after the free run because it will stack onto your popularity from the free downloads. Once you get just a few paid sales going right after your free run, you will start to climb the PAID Sales Ranking charts, which is what you want to do to get more Also Boughts and better exposure to new readers who want to buy books.
Pick ONE day below that is during your free run. We suggest you do at least a two day free run and elect to be promoted on the second day. This will help avoid any snafus in case Amazon messes up your free promotion run on the first day, and so that you can get the last final push on the back end of what your own social media network can do.
Remember, in marketing, consumers want to feel like they’re keeping up with the Jones’. If your book is already showing movement on the free charts by the time we post the freebie blog, you’re more likely to get that impulse click from a reader who is a complete stranger to you and your work. We’re not seeing the tens of thousands of downloads anymore by readers because a year later from the start of the KDP Select freestorm, readers are more selective in the free books they download. Even at the bargain basement price of FREE, your ebook still must look desirable and a great steal at that price!
